Forbidden City, Beijing, PRC
A piece of the Digital Land in the Forbidden City, the largest and most mysterious palace complex in the world. It was the residence for twenty-four powerful rulers from two dynasties of the Celestial Empire – Ming and Qing.
The Forbidden City is situated in the exact center of the globe. At least, that was claimed by the astronomers charged with choosing a place to build the palace. The Emperor's seat on the earth was built as a copy of the Purple Palace – the abode of God in heaven. Naturally, such a sacred place was closed to ordinary people, therefore, it was given the name – the Purple Forbidden City.
Today it is one of the best preserved imperial residences in China and the most popular palace complex in the world. Every year it sees more than 14 million tourists.
Beijing is the third most popular city in China among foreign tourists, after Hong Kong and Shanghai. In total, over 285 million people come here each year. The local residents number about 22 millions.
The Forbidden City covers an area of more than 700 thousand sq. m., with about eight hundred wooden buildings and exactly 9,999 premises.
In 2020, the palace complex will turn 600 years old.
