Tiananmen Square, Beijing, PRC
A piece of the Digital Land on the main square of China – Tiananmen Square. It comprises all the most significant buildings telling about the history and the culture of the country. This is the Forbidden City – the residence of 24 powerful emperors, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, the Great Hall of the People and the absolutely futuristic building of the China National Opera House. Here everything strikes with its grandeur starting with the size of the square itself, which exceeds 440 thousand sq. m. It can accommodate a million people at once!
For more than five centuries, Tiananmen has remained a public meeting place; here the People's Republic of China was proclaimed in 1949, military parades and festivals are held here when the square is decorated with colorful lanterns and flowers. At weekends Beijing residents come here to launch kites, and tourists always walk around here enjoying the monumental grandeur of this place.
But it is especially crowded during sunrise and sunset hours, when the solemn ceremony of raising and lowering of the national flag takes place. This enchanting ritual fascinates guests of the Celestial Empire capital and inspires awe of the locals.
Beijing is the third most popular city in China among foreign tourists after Hong Kong and Shanghai. Each year over 285 million people come here.
