Description

Sensoji Temple, Tokyo, Japan

A piece of the Digital Land close to the famous Sensoji Temple in the Asakusa district center. This is an ancient Buddhist monastery founded back in VI century, long before Tokyo itself. Legend says two fisherman brothers found in the local Sumida River the most beautiful golden statue of Kannon, the deity of mercy. The Sensoji Temple was built as its shrine. Its main gate Kaminarimon is one the most recognizable architectural landmarks of Tokyo.

Visitors from around the world come to admire the ancient Temple and walk along Nakamise-Dori, the popular souvenir street. To this day, a unique atmosphere of old-time shopping districts of the XVII-XIX centuries lingers here. Some small shops have been in the business for almost 300 years. Their product range is most fascinating: traditional Japanese dolls, toys, jewelry, kimono, sweets and, of course, thin dry cookies – sembei.

Additional information

According to the respected magazine Travel + Leisure, Sensoji Temple ranks 7th among the most visited attractions in the world. Every year, more than 30 million people come to see it.

Sensoji is a heart of Asakusa, which is believed to be the most distinctive district in Tokyo. Here, the most ancient architectural monuments sit side by side with ultramodern structures. This is an entertainment, shopping and business area of the capital all rolled into one.
